What “Private” Actually Means

This is not a shared charter. It’s your boat.

“Private” gets thrown around a lot in Key West. Here’s the difference between the boat you’re booking and almost everything else on the harbor.

Shared charter / party boat

  • You’re seated next to people you’ve never met
  • Fixed departure time, fixed route, fixed return
  • 40 to 100 passengers on a pontoon or catamaran
  • Music, photos, and pace are set for the crowd, not you
  • The captain belongs to the whole boat, not your group
  • Bathroom is shared with everyone aboard

Six Fins private boat charter

  • The Jeanneau NC 895 is yours from dock to return
  • Choose from available departure times and shape the day around your group
  • 1–6 guests standard, 7th or 8th via bareboat option — nobody on board you didn’t invite
  • Itinerary built around what your group wants to do
  • USCG-licensed captain dedicated to your party
  • Private head, private shaded cabin, private cooler

The NC 895 is what Jeanneau builds for people who want a yacht-grade ride without yacht-grade fuss. Twin outboards, a full shaded cabin, an enclosed private head, and the kind of beam that keeps the deck steady when the trade winds pick up in the afternoon.

Frequently Asked

Private charter, answered.

The questions guests ask before they book, in plain English.

What does “private boat charter” actually mean?

A private boat charter means the boat is reserved for your group only. No strangers, no shared seating, no party-boat crowd, and no fixed group-tour script.

With Six Fins, your private charter runs on a 30-foot Jeanneau NC 895 with a USCG-licensed captain who builds the day around your group's timing, comfort level, and preferred style of trip.

What kind of boat do we get?

Six Fins' flagship private charter boat is a 30-foot Jeanneau NC 895 cabin cruiser. It has a shaded cabin, private enclosed head, comfortable seating, swim platform, cooler, Bluetooth speaker, and enough room to feel like a private boat rather than a crowded tour vessel.

It is a strong choice for sandbars, snorkeling, sunset cruises, harbor cruises, dolphin trips, eco tours, and custom private days.

How many guests can come?

1–6 guests is the standard six-pack charter, with fuel and a USCG-licensed captain included. A 7th guest is available under a bareboat structure for +$150, and an 8th guest for +$300 — 8 is the maximum.

On the bareboat leg, the Charterer (must be 21+) hires and pays the captain separately at $65 per charter-hour, and fuel is billed at $35 per charter-hour through FareHarbor. The Charterer controls the charter as the vessel renter and selects the captain; the captain controls the safe operation and navigation of the vessel. Call before booking so the team can walk you through the structure.

What is included in a private boat charter?

For groups of 1–6, the published charter price includes the boat, a USCG-licensed captain, fuel, USCG safety gear, cooler with ice, bottled water, snorkel gear where appropriate, and use of the boat's onboard amenities, including the private head and shaded cabin.

You bring food, drinks, towels, sunscreen, and your playlist. Gratuity for the captain is customary but optional. Groups of 7 or 8 run under the bareboat structure — call before booking and the team will walk you through it.

Where can we go on a private charter?

Popular private charter options include hidden local sandbars, backcountry snorkel spots, sunset routes, dolphin-viewing areas, historic harbor routes, eco-tour channels, and custom combo days.

The final route depends on wind, tide, weather, marine traffic, visibility, and captain judgment. That flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of booking a private boat instead of a fixed-route shared tour.

What if we want multiple sandbars or several activities in one day?

If you want to combine sandbars, snorkeling, dolphin watching, eco touring, harbor cruising, or multiple stops, the better fit is usually the Custom Combo Charter.

The Custom Combo Charter is Six Fins' most popular private charter because the 6- or 8-hour format gives your group enough time to build the day around more than one activity without rushing.

How is Six Fins different from a shared party boat?

A shared party boat is built around volume: fixed route, fixed schedule, strangers on board, and a captain managing the whole crowd. A Six Fins private charter is built around your group.

You get a dedicated captain, a private boat, flexible timing, and an itinerary shaped around what you actually want to do: swim, snorkel, sandbar, watch sunset, see dolphins, or simply cruise.

How much does a private boat charter cost?

Six Fins private boat experiences start at $995 for select private charters. The private half-day Jeanneau charter starts at $1,195, with longer private charter options available depending on duration and itinerary.

For standard groups of 1–6, pricing is per boat rather than per person — the charter price is based on the boat, captain, duration, and itinerary. Groups of seven or eight require a different bareboat structure and additional charges; please call before booking.

Is this good for special occasions?

Yes. Six Fins private charters are a strong fit for proposals, anniversaries, birthdays, family reunions, bachelor and bachelorette groups, small weddings, memorials, and custom celebrations.

Tell Six Fins what the occasion is when you book. The captain can help shape the timing, route, music, swim stop, sunset positioning, or quiet moment around what matters.

Where does the boat charter depart from?

Boat charters depart from Perry Hotel & Marina on Stock Island / Key West. The standard boat charter dock is Dock A, Slip #32.

Your confirmation will include arrival instructions. Plan to arrive early enough for parking, loading, a quick safety briefing, and boarding.

What happens if weather is unsafe?

If Six Fins or the captain determines conditions are unsafe, guests may be rescheduled or refunded according to the applicable booking policy. Light rain or clouds do not automatically cancel a charter; lightning, unsafe wind, small-craft conditions, or route-specific safety concerns may.

The captain makes the call based on safety, not pressure to run the trip.
