Why Jewfish is on the short list

Three reasons groups pick Jewfish.

Of all the Lower Keys backcountry sandbars, Jewfish Basin is the most generous on space. That changes how a sandbar day feels.

📏

Room to spread out

The basin is large enough that even on a busy day, anchored boats have hundreds of yards between them. Kids can roam without crowding into another party. That's rare on Lower Keys sandbars.

🌬

Wind-day reliable

Tucked into the backcountry mangroves, Jewfish is protected from most wind directions. North wind days that shut down south-side sandbars rarely affect Jewfish. Captain Dustin will pivot here on rough days.

🐟

Patch reef adjacent

The patch reefs around the edge of the basin hold snapper, hogfish, grunts, and the occasional barracuda. Add a snorkel stop or light-tackle fishing to your sandbar day without adding much time.

A relaxed half-day from Key West

What a Jewfish Basin day actually looks like.

From our dock at the Perry Hotel & Marina, Jewfish is about 45 minutes to an hour of backcountry running — north past the channels behind Stock Island, through the protected flats, into the basin proper. Once you're inside, the boat tucks into the shallows and you anchor on a sandy bottom.

How to spend the day.

The basin is roomy enough that you don't have to plan the day — you can spread out, swim, float, anchor a paddleboard, set up a lunch on the swim platform, or just sit. For more active groups, Captain Dustin can pull anchor and reposition you over a patch reef for a quick snorkel.

Fishing on the side.

If anyone in the group wants to fish, the basin edges hold patch-reef fish year-round. Light tackle, easy to teach a beginner. Add fishing to your Jewfish day for no extra charter cost — rods are aboard on request. See our dedicated patch reef fishing charter for a fishing-first day.

Groups, bachelorette, family reunions.

This is the sandbar to pick if your group is more than four people. The space makes it work. The Jeanneau holds 6 standard, 8 by arrangement — if your group is bigger than that, ask about the 30-foot pontoon at Hurricane Hole or a partner-yacht through our excursion network. We can run multi-boat days for groups up to 30.

How Six Fins gets you to Jewfish

Two ways to spend the day.

All Jewfish trips are private-charter only — the backcountry doesn't take group tours. Both options launch from our Perry dock on Stock Island.

Jewfish Basin FAQ

Jewfish Basin questions, answered.

Where is Jewfish Basin?

Jewfish Basin is a large shallow backcountry basin north of Key West, about 8–12 miles by boat from Six Fins' Perry Hotel & Marina dock.

It is surrounded by mangrove islands and reachable only by private boat. The appeal is space: shallow water, sandy bottom, room for groups, and less crowding than the better-known tourist stops.

Why do groups like Jewfish Basin?

Jewfish Basin is one of the best Key West backcountry sandbars for groups because it has room to spread out. Kids can play without crowding another boat, adults can float and relax, and the captain can choose an anchorage with space around it.

It is a strong fit for families, bachelorette groups, reunions, and guests who want an easy sandbar day without a tight deck or crowded party-boat feeling.

How long is the run to Jewfish?

The run is usually about 45–60 minutes each way depending on route, tide, weather, and marine traffic.

That backcountry ride is part of the experience: shallow flats, mangrove channels, clearer water as you move north, and a calmer feel than many open-ocean routes.

Is Jewfish good for kids?

Yes. Jewfish is one of the more family-friendly sandbars because the water is shallow, the bottom is sandy, and the basin has room.

Bring sun protection, snacks, and anything your kids like for the water. Six Fins will plan the anchorage and life-jacket setup around the ages and comfort level of the group.

Can we snorkel or fish at Jewfish Basin?

The sandbar itself is sandy, not a reef, so snorkeling on the bar is limited. But the edges of the basin can offer patch reef, fish, and a better snorkel or light-tackle stop when conditions allow.

If fishing or snorkeling is a major goal, ask about the Custom Combo Charter or a dedicated patch reef fishing or snorkel charter instead of trying to make a 4-hour sandbar trip do everything.

Can we combine Jewfish with Snipes or Mud Keys?

Yes, especially on a longer day. Jewfish, Mud Keys, and Snipes form a natural backcountry triangle, and the captain can choose the best two or three stops based on tide and wind.

If your group wants multiple backcountry sandbars, book the Custom Combo Charter. It is Six Fins' most popular private charter for multi-activity days because the 6- or 8-hour format gives the captain time to build a real route.

What does Jewfish Basin cost?

Jewfish Basin can be part of the 4-hour Secret Local Sandbar Escape for $1,195. For a longer multi-stop day, the Custom Combo Charter is $1,395 for 6 hours or $1,795 for 8 hours.

Pricing is per boat, not per person. Up to 6 guests is standard, and 8 may be available by arrangement where the charter setup allows.

Is Jewfish Basin private or shared?

Six Fins runs Jewfish Basin as a private charter. Your group has the boat and captain; you are not joining a mixed public sandbar tour.

That private format matters in the backcountry because the captain can choose the best anchorage, shift for wind, and match the day to your group instead of following a fixed public-tour loop.
