Key West Fishing Charter

Key West Fishing Charter — Patch Reef

Light-tackle reef fishing in shallow, clear water for yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper, hogfish, and grunts. A relaxed, family-friendly half-day — not an eight-hour offshore grind. Private boat. USCG-licensed captain. From Perry Hotel & Marina on Stock Island.

We're not a sport-fishing operation. We're a private day-charter where you can fish the patch reefs with a captain who knows them — and snorkel, swim, or hit a sandbar with the rest of your day.

First, what is it?

What is patch reef fishing, exactly?

A patch reef is a small, isolated head of living coral and hard bottom — usually the size of a car or a small house — surrounded by sand and turtle grass. There are hundreds of them scattered across the shallows between Key West and the main reef tract, sitting in 5 to 25 feet of clear water. The fish hold tight to each patch. You drift or anchor up-current, drop a small bait on light spinning tackle, and watch the line.

The whole experience is the opposite of offshore sport fishing. There's no trolling at 8 knots. No fighting belt. No outriggers. No bouncing through chop for an hour to reach a spot. Most patches we fish are inside the reef line in protected water — one- to two-foot seas, often glass-flat. You can see the bottom. Sometimes you can see the fish before they take the bait.

It's light-line, light-tackle, visual fishing. The bites come constantly when conditions are right, the captain handles all the seasonal-limit and size-limit math for you, and the pace is slow enough that someone in your group can be napping on the bow while you're fighting a yellowtail off the stern. That's the trip.

Be honest with yourself

Why this trip, and not offshore sport fishing?

Key West has world-class offshore sport fishing — marlin, sailfish, tuna, kingfish, mahi. We're not that. Here's why someone books our patch reef trip instead.

Not everyone in your group fishes

On a dedicated sport-fishing boat, four hours of trolling is brutal for anyone who isn't holding a rod. The Jeanneau has shade, a head, room to lounge, and a swim platform. Non-anglers swim and sun while anglers fish.

Constant action, not a long wait

Offshore is a marathon — long runs, fewer hookups, occasional fireworks. Patch-reef fishing is a steady drip of small-fish action: snapper, hogfish, grunts, all afternoon. Kids stay engaged. Beginners hook fish.

Half the cost, half the day

Full-day Key West sport-fishing trips run $1,500–$3,000+ for a boat. Our four-hour patch reef charter is $1,195 all-in, leaves the afternoon free, and still ends with a cooler of fish for dinner.

The lineup

What you'll catch on the Key West patch reefs

The bread-and-butter species. These are the eating fish locals actually target — small to medium, light-tackle-friendly, and excellent on the plate.

Yellowtail snapper

The Florida Keys signature snapper. Light fight, picky eater, one of the best-eating fish in the ocean. Caught on chum slicks over the patches.

Mangrove snapper

Smart, structure-hugging, surprisingly hard-fighting for their size. The most consistent bite on the patches year-round.

Mutton snapper

The trophy of the patch reef. Spookier, bigger, harder to fool. When one eats, the rod doubles.

Hogfish

The single best-eating fish in the Keys, full stop. Caught on shrimp on the bottom. Not legal year-round — the captain knows the season.

Grunts & porkfish

Constant action. Smaller, scrappier, great for kids. The fish that keep everyone hooking up between the better bites.

Cero mackerel & small grouper

The bonus fish. Cero blow up on a chum line; small groupers come off the bottom. Most groupers on the shallow patches are catch-and-release.

The Six Fins move: fish in the morning, sandbar or snorkel in the afternoon.

Most of our patch-reef bookings are actually combo days. You fish for two to three hours while the bite is on, then pull anchor, run ten minutes, and anchor at a hidden local sandbar or a swimmable reef. Half the day fishing, half the day floating. Everyone in the group ends up happy.

Tell the captain at the dock what your group wants. Want all-fishing, no swim? Done. Want one hour of fishing and three hours sandbar? Also done. We're a private boat — the day is yours to shape.

Who's running the boat

Your captain and crew

Captain Dustin is the USCG-licensed captain running the patch reef trips. He grew up on these waters, fishes them year-round on his own time, and knows the patches by name, depth, tide, and which way the wind has to be to fish them clean. He's also patient — first-timers, kids, and nervous spouses are exactly who he likes having on board.

Dana, our mate, handles bait, knots, releases, photos, and keeps the cooler stocked. Between the two of them, you'll spend zero time fumbling with terminal tackle and all your time fishing.

The boat is a 30' Jeanneau NC 895 Weekender — an express-style cruiser, not a center console. It's comfortable for non-anglers (shade, head, lounging space, swim platform) and very capable on the patches. We won't pretend it's a tower boat for offshore; we'll happily put you on snapper all day.

Patch reef questions, answered

Frequently asked — before you book

What is patch reef fishing?

Patch reefs are small, isolated heads of coral and hard bottom scattered across the shallows between Key West and the main reef tract, usually in 5–25 feet of clear water. You drift or anchor up-current, drop a small bait on light spinning tackle, and watch the line. It's visual, light-line fishing — the opposite of trolling offshore.

Is Six Fins a sport-fishing operation?

No — and we want to be upfront. Six Fins is a private day-charter on a 30' Jeanneau NC 895, not a tower-equipped sport-fisher. If your goal is trolling for marlin in 1,500 feet of water, you want a dedicated sport-fishing boat. If you want a relaxed half-day of light-tackle reef fishing where the rest of your group can swim or sun, that's our lane.

What fish will we catch?

Yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper, mutton snapper, hogfish, porkfish, and grunts are the daily lineup. Sometimes cero mackerel, small grouper (usually catch-and-release on shallow patches), or a stray jack. These are the eating fish locals actually target — small to medium, light-tackle, and excellent on the plate.

Can we bring kids?

Yes — this is the version of Key West fishing that works for families. Calm water, frequent bites, a captain who handles hooks and releases, and a boat with shade and a head. Kids who'd be miserable on an offshore trip thrive here. Life jackets in every size.

Do I need a fishing license?

No. The Florida saltwater fishing license is covered under our commercial charter license while you're fishing with us. You don't need to buy or carry your own. The captain also handles seasons, size limits, and bag limits — if a fish isn't legal that day, it goes back.

Is gear and bait included?

Yes — light spinning rods rigged for reef fishing, fresh-frozen bait (ballyhoo, shrimp, pilchards), terminal tackle, ice, and cold water are all included. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a swimsuit; that's it. If you have a favorite spinning rod, you're welcome to bring it.

Can we combine fishing with snorkeling or a sandbar?

Yes — that's our most common booking. Patch reefs sit right next to swimmable reef and a short run from hidden sandbars. Tell the captain what your group wants and he'll build the day around it. The full-day Patch Reef + Sandbar combo is our most popular configuration.

Will I get seasick?

Patch reef fishing is the option least likely to make anyone sick. Patches sit in protected water inside the reef line — usually 1- to 2-foot seas, often flatter. We're not pounding offshore. If anyone in your group is nervous about getting out on the water, this is the right trip to book.

Can we keep what we catch?

Yes — anything legal goes in the cooler. Yellowtail and mangrove snapper are excellent table fish; hogfish is one of the best-eating species in the Keys. The captain or mate filets your catch at the dock at no charge. Local restaurants like Hogfish Bar and Grill will cook your catch to order — bring the filets in, eat them an hour later.

Pick a half-day. We'll find the bite.

Light tackle, clear water, snapper in the cooler by lunch. Four hours, up to six guests, USCG-licensed captain, from Perry Hotel & Marina on Stock Island.
