Why families pick Six Fins

The Key West jet ski tour that doesn’t feel like a herd

Most Key West jet ski operators load 20 to 25 skis behind one guide and call it a tour. With kids on the back, that’s a long string of WaveRunners moving at the pace of the slowest rider, with the guide unable to actually flex for who’s on board. Six Fins runs six skis max per departure. The guide can keep eyes on every family on the water, slow the pace for the kid who’s nervous, and pick up the pace once everyone’s loosened up.

Per-jet-ski pricing matters too. A parent and up to two kids on one ski pay $209 for the 2-hour tour — same flat rate as a solo rider. A bigger family runs two skis side by side in the same group, and on most per-person operators that same family pays more for less. Six Fins prices by the ski, not by the head.

Departures from Perry Hotel & Marina also include a complimentary Perry Hotel Day Pass — pool and gym access, an approximately $35 value, subject to hotel rules and availability. Most families use it to swim and grab lunch at the resort after the ride.

Frequently asked

Family jet ski tour questions, answered.

Can kids ride on a Six Fins jet ski tour?

Yes. Passengers must be at least 6 years old, and any child rider must ride with an adult 21 or older on the same ski. Drivers must be at least 16 years old with a valid government-issued photo ID.

Every ride includes a safety briefing, fitted life jacket, and guide support. For children under 10, Six Fins recommends bringing a properly fitted USCG-approved Type III life jacket if you have one.

How many people can fit on one jet ski?

Each Yamaha WaveRunner VX may carry up to three riders, subject to the 530-lb total weight limit, rider comfort, sea conditions, and guide approval.

Most families ride with one adult driver and one child passenger. Some families may ride with one adult and two children on the same ski if weight, comfort, and conditions make sense. Bigger families can book multiple skis and ride together in the same small group.

Can we just rent a jet ski and take the kids out ourselves?

No. Six Fins does not offer unguided jet ski rentals. All Six Fins jet ski experiences are guided or guide-supervised for safety, route control, and responsible operation in Key West waters.

That is especially important with kids on board. Key West waters include tides, boat traffic, shallow flats, channels, sandbars, and hazards just below the surface. Our guides know the safer lines and may ask families to stay in the guide's wake or follow a specific route through certain areas.

Which Six Fins tour is best with kids?

The 1-Hour Freestyle Ride is often best for younger kids or first-time families because it is shorter and guide-supervised in approved riding areas.

The 90-Minute Premium Tour is a strong family option if your kids want a chance at a Boca Chica Sandbar stop (when conditions allow) where they can get off the ski and swim. The 2-Hour Flagship Tour is best for older kids and families who can handle a longer ride and want the full 28-mile island-loop experience.

Is the 2-hour tour too long for kids?

It depends on age, comfort, and stamina. The 2-Hour Flagship Tour is the longest jet ski tour in Key West and the Lower Keys, so it is best for older kids, confident families, and riders who are comfortable staying on the water longer.

For younger children or first-time riders, the 1-Hour Freestyle Ride or 90-Minute Premium Tour may be the better first choice.

What safety gear do children wear?

Every rider wears a USCG-approved life jacket. Six Fins keeps child-sized PFDs at the dock when available, but for children under 10, the safest choice is often to bring your own properly fitted USCG-approved Type III life jacket.

The guide will also review boarding, seating, hand placement, speed, spacing, and how to ride safely with children before departure.

Does the driving parent need a boating safety card?

If the driver was born on or after January 1, 1988, Florida requires approved boating-safety education documentation to operate a jet ski. Drivers who need it can take the FWC-approved Temporary Boater Safety Course online ahead of time and bring proof — the fee is $9.99.

Drivers must also be at least 16 years old with a valid government-issued photo ID. Children riding as passengers do not need a boating-safety card.

What should families bring?

Bring photo ID for drivers, any required boating-safety documentation, sunscreen, towels, sunglasses, swimwear, and dry clothes for after the ride. For younger children, bring a properly fitted USCG-approved Type III life jacket if you have one.

Leave valuables at the dock when possible. Everyone should expect to get wet.

How early should we arrive with kids?

Plan to arrive 25 to 30 minutes before departure. Families usually need a little extra time for parking, check-in, waivers, life jackets, and bathroom stops.

If a driver needs to complete the temporary boating-safety certificate at the dock, arrive at least 1 hour early. Tours leave on time, and late arrivals may miss the tour without refund.

What is the cancellation policy for families?

Direct jet ski bookings require 48-hour notice for cancellation. Bookings made within 48 hours, cancellations inside 48 hours, late arrivals, and no-shows are non-refundable.

Reservation Refund Protection, when purchased, may allow an eligible refund or transfer up to one hour before departure. If Six Fins determines conditions are unsafe, guests may be rescheduled or refunded according to the applicable booking policy.
